American anthropologist Harold Scheffler produced these photographs and sound recordings during field research on Choiseul between 1958 and 1961 and later work from 1967 to 1968 on Rendova and other islands near New Georgia. The photographs also include images taken on Simbo (Solomon Islands), Norfolk Island and in Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. Most of the photographs document social life in rural villages of the Solomons, including religious activities, ritual, dance, and material culture. The images from Rendova include extensive documentation of the Christian Fellowship Church, a religious revitalization movement led by Silas Eto. The sound recordings were digitized through support by a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant program is made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Sound recordings are available upon request and registration.
