In 1954, the La Jolla-San Diego County Theatre and Arts Foundation (later renamed the Theatre and Arts Foundation of San Diego County) was incorporated to promote cultural development through the performing arts, and to conduct a campaign for funds to build a performing arts center. Marian Longstreth became the Foundation president and began developing a public appreciation program for the arts, including educational lectures. Between 1958 and 1963, the Foundation hosted a "Meet the Scientist" lecture series for high school students that featured dozens of presentations by internationally prominent local scientists, held at campuses throughout San Diego. Presenters included experts from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, General Atomic, the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory, Convair-Astronautics, San Diego State University, Ryan Aeronautical Co., and the University of California, San Diego, among other organizations. Topics were varied, but included presentations on oceanography, physics, mathematics, astrophysics, atomic energy, geology, medicine and biology. Notable speakers included Walter Munk and Edward Teller.
The Theatre and Arts Foundation of San Diego County Records collection contains original sound recordings on reel-to-reel tapes of thirty-two "Meet the Scientist" lectures, and one additional typescript for a lecture that was not recorded. These recordings and the typescript have been digitally reformatted for preservation. - Creation Date
