Description

Images of locomotives, trains, and sections of track from the San Diego & Arizona and San Diego & Arizona Eastern Railway companies, photographed by R. P. Middlebrook. SD&A was a short line railroad founded by John D. Spreckels in 1906, originating in San Diego and terminating in El Centro, California. It was built to connect San Diego to a transcontinental rail link to the east.

Middlebrook was a locomotive engineer for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. He photographed, wrote about, and collected materials related to locomotives and railroad history. Most of the images in this collection were scanned from original black and white nitrate negatives.
