Description

Through a collaboration between NOAA Fisheries Service, Scripps Institution of Oceanography and California Department of Fish & Wildlife, a cooperative was formed in 1949 to study and document the California Current.  This group was named California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI). It was initially charged with studying the collapse of the sardine population off California and has evolved over the years to study many aspects of oceanography and marine life.

Four times each year, research cruises disembark from California to stop at prescribed sampling locations to monitor the ecology of fish populations and oceanographic parameters that can be used as indicators of climate change.  With more than seven decades of data collected, the CalCOFI cruises are a rich source of information. These photographs document the tools, processes and people that make this data collection possible.
