The David Burrell Richardson Baja California Video Collection consists of 54 video interviews with experts on the Baja California Peninsula, including distinguished academics, scientists, explorers, photographers, government and NGO officials, as well as community members on both sides of the border. This archive was originally conceived as a research resource for scholars from the University of California and the National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH) that have been collaborating on an effort to nominate the Historic Corridor of the Californias as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Among those interviewed are Harry Crosby, Historian, Photographer, Explorer and Author, Exequiel Ezcurra, Director of UC-Mexus, Denise Ducheny, Senior Advisor to UCSD’s Center for U.S.-Mexico Studies, Miguel León Portilla, Professor and Researcher Emeritus at UNAM, Julia Bendímez Patterson Director of INAH for Baja California Norte, David Piñera, Founder of the Institute of Historical Research at UABC. Michael Connolly-Miskwish, Kumeyaay Historian, SDSU Adjunct Professor and Environmental Consultant, Margaret Field, Professor of American Indian Studies at SDSU, Francisco López Morales, Director of the INAH World Heritage Sites Department and Lucila del Carmen León Velazco, Historian and Author at the Institute of Historical Research, UABC.
The long-term goal of the D. B. Richardson Baja California Video Collection is to present and archive testimonials of many individuals who have made contributions that enrich and deepen the understanding about the history, natural environment and multicultural heritage shared by the people of the three Californias; California, Baja California and Baja California Sur. Included are topics on natural and social history, which take into consideration the cultural landscape, including the Native, Colonial and Mexican Periods. The interviews document the people, landscape, ranches, communities and the open road, providing a unique record for historical, scientific, and cultural researchers and travelers of the future.
In conjunction with filmmaker Isaac Artenstein of Cinewest Productions, Richardson recorded interviews with all 54 individuals in their personal living and/or work environments on high-definition video. Each interview is approximately 60-90 minutes in length, focusing on topics pertinent to each of the interviewee’s areas of expertise, providing a vivid and personal complement to their scholarly, cultural and/or fieldwork as well as published work (narrative or visual) in an intimate conversational setting. Testimonials within this Video Collection present new opportunities to value a realistic, inclusive, multicultural interpretation of the shared history and cultural heritage of the people of the three Californias. - Creation Date
