Films and sound recordings taken by British anthropologist, Anthony Forge (1929-1991), during his research with the Abelam and neighboring peoples of the Sepik River region in Papua New Guinea. The films depict Abelam life, particularly ritual and artistic aspects, such as the building of ‘haus tambaran’ (spirit cult houses), the elaborate display and exchange of long yams, various stages of male initiation into the tambaran cult, and female initiation rituals.
The recordings were made during Forge's field studies in Papua New Guinea. The sound recordings were digitized through support by a Recordings at Risk grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR). The grant program is made possible by funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Sound recordings are available upon request and registration. - Creation Date
