Description

In 2004, David Chapin and Zeynep Turan were architects in the Ph.D. program in Environmental Psychology, Graduate Center, City University of New York who completed a video research project entitled, "The Living Salk Institute." Chapin and Turan were interested in the question of how people make meaning in the built environment, and used the Salk Institute for Biological Research (SIBS), designed by Louis I. Kahn, as their study site. Over eleven days, Chapin and Turan arranged to interview 18 people at the Institute, usually in specific locations chosen by each interviewee. Subjects included people who had first-hand knowledge of the creation of the SIBS, both as an organization, and in the design and construction of its building. Some were employees of the Institute, both long-term and new, as well as members of the Salk family. Chapin and Turan also filmed views of the building interiors and exteriors, attempting to document how it is experienced by its users. Out of many hours of footage, they created a 55-minute research documentary to "explore the question of how people make meaning in this well-known icon of modern architecture" (from project overview).

This digital collection includes the original videos, the final research documentary, and a written overview of the project and supporting documentation donated to the Library. Video subjects agreed to be videotaped with the understanding that the material may be used in the documentary project and for non-commercial purposes only. Permission to quote from, capture images, or cite content from the video interviews must be granted by the interview subject as well as Chapin and Turan. Interviews are available for viewing through the Library's Virtual Reading Room service. The researcher's non-interview video footage of SIBS (including interior and exterior shots) and their final documentary have no restrictions on non-commercial use, but David Chapin and Zeynep Turan must be credited if use is made of, or reference is made to, materials in this collection.
